A Week in Paradise

This has been a week in paradise. Not that I haven't been getting grubby hugging stones, it's just that the walling has been getting done in a perfectly idyllic setting under sunny skies. The ruin is perched above a waterfall on Cold River. The sound of rushing water fills the air. I'm reinvigorating the site by removing brush and trees that have overtaken the space within the footprint of the old mill foundation and restoring sections of wall blown out five years ago by a 100-year flood. Pictured is the setting before clearing, and with one free-standing wall section completed.

  1. I have to ask, what is the purpose of the wood in the unfinished wall to the left? Thanks.

  2. The short lengths of 2"x6" are space holders for what will become channels in the wall for cantilevered deck joists. There will be 6'x10' wood decks on both sides of the wall.
