There’s a peculiar feeling I get by being in the presence of greatness. I don’t know how it works but, in some way, experiencing greatness feels like a validation of my own humble existence. Whether it’s a natural phenomena or the work of one creative mind, exposure to something wonderfully unique is uplifting, and a reminder of how truly magnificent the world is. That’s the sensation I felt while visiting the Frank Lloyd Wright designed home, Fallingwater, in southwestern, PA. Here was a piece of architecture that embodied the brilliance of one human being. All that Wright was, and understood about his place and time, manifest itself in this woodland retreat. Built in 1935, Fallingwater is not a particularly large home, or one with dazzling furnishings. It shines because it is the distillation of one persons life-long quest toward the creation of beauty.

ReplyDeleteWe have E to thank for the photos. On our site visits, she and I each have a camera in hand, wander around separately, and then compare what we saw. Funny how some photos turn out to be identical and others are of completely different things!
